What is Urticaria ?

Urticaria also known as Hives are red, itchy, raised areas of skin that appear in varying shapes and sizes, sometimes burning is also a prominent symptom. The lesion or spots can be a few millimeters to centimeters in diameter. Urticaria can appear as round, or they can form rings or large patches, sometime they have irregular shape as well. Wheals (welts), red lesions with a red "flare" at the borders, are another manifestation of Urticaria. Urticaria can occur anywhere on the body, such as the trunk, arms, legs, and face.

Approximately 20% of people are estimated to develop urticaria at some point in their life span. Of those with chronic urticaria, some 70-75% is idiopathic, idiopathic means that no cause, allergic or otherwise, can be found.

Angioedema is similar to urticaria or hives, here the swelling occurs beneath or deeper under the skin instead of on the surface. Here the swelling is concentrated around eyes and lips and sometimes genitals, hands and feet. It generally lasts longer than hives, but the swelling usually goes away in less than 24 hours.

Occasionally disfiguring occurs due to prolonged tissue swelling and inflammation. Angioedema of the throat, tongue, or lungs can lead to blockage of the airways, causing difficulty in breathing. This may become Fatal.

What Causes Hives and Angioedema ?

Angioedema or Urticaria occur when histamine, and blood plasma leaks out of small blood vessels in the skin. Histamine is a chemical released from specialized cells along the skin's blood vessels.

Histamine release can be triggered by allergic reactions, chemicals in foods, insect stings, sunlight exposure, or medicines. Sometimes it's impossible to find out exactly why hives have formed.

Types

There are several different types of hives and angioedema, including:

• Acute urticaria and/or angiodema: Urticaria or swelling lasting less than six weeks. The most common causes are foods, medicines, latex, or infections. Insect bites and internal disease may also be responsible. The most common foods that cause hives are nuts, chocolate, fish, tomatoes, eggs, fresh berries, soy, wheat, and milk. Fresh foods cause urticaria more often than cooked foods. Certain food additives and preservatives are also to be blamed. Aspirin and some Non steroidal anti inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen) are some medicines that can cause urticaria or hives. High blood pressure medications (ACE inhibitors), or painkillers such as codeine can also trigger the process.
• Chronic urticaria and/or angioedema: Hives or swelling lasting more than six weeks. The cause is generally more difficult to identify than those causing acute urticaria and/or angioedema. The causes can be similar to those of acute urticaria but can also include autoimmunity, chronic infections, hormonal disorders, and malignancy.
• Physical urticaria: Urticaria caused by direct physical stimulation of the skin caused by any factor such as--- cold, heat, sun exposure, vibration, pressure, sweating, and exercises. The hives usually occur right where the skin was stimulated and rarely appear anywhere else. Most of the hives appear within one hour after exposure.
• Dermatographism: Hives that form after firmly stroking or scratching the skin. These hives can also occur along with other forms of urticaria.
• Hereditary angioedema: This is painful swelling of tissue. It is passed on through families.

How Can Hives Be Managed ?

Certain tips to take care of are:

• Avoid hot water; use lukewarm water instead.
• Use gentle, mild soap.
• Apply cool compresses or wet cloths to the affected areas.
• Try to work and sleep in a cool room.
• Wear loose-fitting lightweight clothes.

When Should I Call the Doctor About Hives or Angiodema ?

If hives or angioedema occur with any of the following symptoms, contact your doctor right away:

• Dizziness
• Wheezing
• Difficulty breathing
• Tightness in the chest
• Swelling of the tongue, lip, or face, with choked feeling in throat
